Additional information
BACKGROUND
He was born in Chicago, IL, United States of America, to a Mexican-born father and a US-born mother. He was approached to compete for Mexico by Mexican officials. "They contacted me to represent Mexico. At first, it was for the country and then I also represented Jalisco State. I am very happy to be part of the Mexican team. I decided to represent Mexico because I had already competed for Team USA for so many years. It was time to represent my Mexican side of the family." LEARNING FROM A CHAMPION
He trained under Belarusian coach Vitaly Scherbo while he was part of the gymnastics programme in the United States of America. Scherbo, who won six gold medals while representing the Unified Team at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, helped him strengthen his mental approach to the sport. "Scherbo taught me how to compete and how to see myself on the medal podium. The first thing he taught me was the mentality. If I didn't think about winning then I should forget about gymnastics. I learnt that adversity is very important because I need it in order to know my own limits and how far I can go. If something comes easily, then it goes away very easily too. So, I like it when it takes a big effort." (bolavip.com, 13 Feb 2021)
