NAOMI VALENZO,
NEW PRESIDENT OF THE PAN AMERICAN UNION
The Pan American Gymnastics Union (PAGU) has a new face at its helm.
Naomi Valenzo (MEX) was elected President of PAGU during this summer’s Pan American Games in Toronto (CAN). She succeeds Zobeira Hernandez Delgado (VEN) and took office on October 17. Alongside her was Patricia Dieguez de Rosales (GUA), who will act as secretary general, succeeding Sonia Sequera (VEN).
Following protocol, an official document was signed during the 46th Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Glasgow (GBR) and handed over to FIG President Bruno Grandi (ITA) and Secretary General André Gueisbuhler.
Valenzo has ambitious goals for her initial four-year term in office. "We want to focus on education. In addition to FIG Academies that we will continue to organise for coaches' education, we want to hold more camps for gymnasts. Moreover, we want to improve the image of Gymnastics and of PAGU, make it more marketable," she said. "We will work closely with the FIG to assure this development. And in order to be in line with the international rules, we will make a few adjustments to our statutes."

VALENTIN MOGUILNYI, FIVE-TIME WORLD GOLD MEDALLIST, PASSES AWAY
The elegant Valentin Victorovich Moguilnyi (USSR), who won more than a dozen World and European medals between 1985 and 1990, passed away on November 22, 2015 following a heart attack.
He was 49.
Born December 18, 1965 in central Ukraine, Moguilnyi was one of the standout figures of the exceptional Soviet teams of the 1980s. His long legs and graceful comportment made him a formidable figure, especially on Pommel Horse, his best event.
Coached by Alexander Alexandrov, Moguilnyi won World titles on Pommel Horse, Parallel Bars and with the team in 1985 and again on Pommel Horse and with the team in 1989. He also won silver in the All-around at the 1989 Worlds, and closed out his career in style with the European All-around title in 1990.
After retiring from gymnastics, Moguilnyi moved to France, where he coached in several different cities, most recently in the suburbs of Paris. From the mid-1980s to the end of the 1990s, he was married to 1981 World All-around champion Olga Bicherova (USSR), with whom he has a son.
On behalf of the international Gymnastics family, the FIG wishes to extend their condolences to Moguilnyi’s family and friends.
GYMNASTICS AMBASSADOR JOHANNA QUAAS CELEBRATES HER 90TH BIRTHDAY
Johanna Quaas, who was recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's oldest competitive gymnast in 2012, celebrated her 90th birthday in her birthplace, Halle (GER) on November 20, 2015.
Johanna Quaas, who was recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's oldest competitive gymnast in 2012, celebrated her 90th birthday in her birthplace, Halle (GER) on November 20, 2015.
Quaas rose to international prominence at age 86 when several YouTube clips showed her performing exhibition exercises during the FIG World Challenge Cup "Turnier der Meister" in Cottbus. The clips went viral and generated more than 3.7 million views worldwide.
Having grown up doing sports, Germany’s "Turnoma" (“Gymnastics grandma”), first participated in a Gymnastics competition in 1934 and was a regular competitor in the amateur competition "Landes-Seniorenspiele" staged in Saxony. Quaas, the 11-time German Senior Citizen’s Champion, retired from competitive Gymnastics in August 2015 after her favourite event, the "Jahnturnfest" near Leipzig.
In May 2015, Quaas was honoured at the 19th annual International Gymnastics Hall of Fame (IGHOF) ceremony, where she received the Nadia Comaneci Sportsmanship Award.
A certified coach and former PE teacher, the mother of three daughters is praised as an incredible ambassador for the sport and an example of the power of lifelong fitness, proper diet and discipline.
Happy Birthday, Johanna!
