WELCOME

BY LCDR. SRAYUTH PATANASAK, SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE GYMNASTICS ASSOCIATION OF THAILAND

The Gymnastics Association of Thailand is honored that the 16th FIG Council will unfold against the backdrop of Bangkok, Thailand’s biggest city and one of the world’s most visited places.

Like the sport of Gymnastics itself, Bangkok takes pride in its history while striving to provide a thoroughly modern and enriching experience for all who wish to discover it. Here we hope you are able to take full advantage of our marvelous temples, floating markets and wonderful food.

We recognise that the projects under discussion at the FIG Council are of the utmost importance for the future development of the sport, and will do everything we can to ensure that they take place in an atmosphere of harmony and with the spirit of cooperation and friendship.

We look forward to welcoming you all at the 16th Council Meeting, in the hopes that it provides an unforgettable experience for Council members and the Gymnastics family alike.

See you soon in Bangkok!

The 2017-2020 Olympic cycle will figure heavily on the agenda at May’s FIG Council meeting in Bangkok. Indeed, it is in Thailand that the 44 members will be tasked with adopting the technical regulation changes resulting from the redesign of the Tokyo Olympic qualification system. The system takes effect on January 1, 2017. It will be based on a broader calendar of qualification events for the Games than the one presently in place, which takes into account only the World Championships the year before the Games and the Test Event.

Approval of the 2015 financial statements and the revised 2016 budget will also be on the Council’s agenda. As a body, the FIG Council is comprised of elected Executive Committee members, representatives of Continental Unions and the presidents of the technical committees in each discipline.

Other Council responsibilities include allocation of the World Championships and other major FIG events. In the balance this year are the 2020 Acrobatic and Aerobic World Championships, as well as the 2021 World Gym for Life Challenge. In addition, members will select the host city for the 2017 Council meeting from amongst various proposals from national federations.

2016 is a major election year for the International Federation and the May Council promises to be an important prelude for the Tokyo conference in October, where Bruno Grandi will bow out after 20 years as FIG President.
