So if I'm having a bad day in the gym and can't do something difficult, I'll focus on something small, like my toe point. Doing one positive thing every day for the past 18 years definitely adds up, which has helped me to get to where I am." (browngirlmagazine.com, 03 Sep 2019)

FURTHER EDUCATION
After earning an undergraduate degree from Stanford University, he began a master's degree in mechanical engineering at the same institution. He believes the course, which had a focus on dynamics, has helped him to understand the technical advice his coach gives him. "A lot of times when a coach gives me a correction, I'll try to think out why that correction works, and see what I can do to think about it a certain way so I can get my body to maximise that correction. If I need to elevate my body more in a circle on pommel horse, which group should I activate to get my body as elevated as possible?" (flogymnastics.com, 23 Dec 2020; gymblogcentral.com, 13 Mar 2018)
FEAR OF HEIGHTS
The high bar is the hardest event for him due to his fear of heights. "I'm scared of heights, I refuse to go [on roller coasters]. So every turn I take fills me with fear. It's also an event that does not come naturally to me, so I've had to work extremely hard to figure out how to construct a routine that works for me." (gymblogcentral.com, 13 Mar 2018)
