Safeguarding

Safeguarding in Gymnastics

Everyone in gymnastics has the right to take part in a safe, respectful environment, free from harassment, abuse and other forms of non-accidental violence, regardless of identity, background, ability or status. World Gymnastics is committed to prevention, education, reporting and response across the sport.

President’s message

“Gymnastics is more than a sport.  It is a place where people grow, learn and build confidence for life. For this to happen, our sport must always be safe.

Safeguarding is not just a rule. It is a shared commitment to care for, respect, and protect every athlete and participant.

I want to thank everyone working on these initiatives, as your efforts are essential to the future of our sport. At World Gymnastics, we believe sport is a force for good. We recognise that our community is diverse, with different realities and challenges. That is why our work is not only about establishing rules but also about providing support through education, practical tools and stronger connections.

Together, we can ensure safeguarding becomes part of everyday practice. This journey depends on all of us. Thank you for your commitment to this vital mission.”

Morinari WATANABE, President, World Gymnastics

What safeguarding means

Safeguarding means preventing, identifying and responding to harassment, abuse and other non-accidental violence in gymnastics. It includes building cultures where participants know their rights, understand warning signs, and can raise concerns safely and confidently.

Who is responsible

Safeguarding is a shared responsibility. World Gymnastics has policies and procedures in place, and each National Federation is responsible for adopting and implementing effective measures to protect athletes and all other participants.

How to report

If the concern relates to a National Federation, its territory, or its members

Report through the relevant National Federation procedures, National Olympic Committee, sports authority, or official safeguarding body in that country.

If the concern relates to an official FIG event, involves another federation, or you cannot report through your national system

Contact the Gymnastics Ethics Foundation Helpdesk. The Foundation provides reporting channels and contact options, including an online form, WhatsApp and phone support.

Support and resources

Everyone in gymnastics should know where to seek help, what support is available, and how reports will be handled under FIG policies and procedures. Access the key safeguarding policies, codes and reporting resources below.
