BROKEN BACK
In October 2013 she broke her back testing a new move [shap-half], just before trials for the 2013 World Championship in Antwerp, Belgium. She was told by a surgeon she would never compete again. She embarked on light training while awaiting surgery. "The more I trained, the better I felt. This surgeon had clearly not worked with any gymnasts before. We are undeniably a special type of crazy and the option to never flip our bodies around just doesn't process in our minds." She eventually did not undergo surgery and returned to international competition at the World Challenge Cup in Doha, Qatar, in March 2014. REIGNITED PASSION
She seriously considered retirement after the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing at age 19. However, a stint as a student-athlete at Oregon State University in the United States rekindled her passion for gymnastics. "After Beijing I was exhausted. I thought I'd just do four years of college to help wean me off the sport. But the gymnastics programme was incredible and my experience over there taught me to love performing again. I had no idea it would be that good." (themorningbulletin.com.au, 05 Jul 2013)
MEDICAL MARVEL
She was born with diaphragmatic hernia [hole in diaphragm], a congenital defect that is life- threatening in infants. She went into surgery after birth with only a one-in-three chance of survival. (gymnastics.org.au, 22 Mar 2012)
