RETIREMENT
In January 2023 she announced her retirement from competition. "With a heavy heart and an array of emotions, today is the day I announce my retirement from gymnastics. To say it's been a difficult decision is a massive understatement, but after a really tough last few years, I've made the decision to prioritise my mental health and happiness. Gymnastics has been my life for as long as I can remember and I'm proud of everything I was fortunate enough to achieve in the sport. Competing and winning medals for Great Britain has meant everything and more to me and I'll miss it enormously." (british-gymnastics.org, 23 Jan 2023; bbc.co.uk, 23 Jan 2023; skysports.com, 23 Jan 2023)
DEALING WITH ANXIETY
She has spoken about experiencing heightened anxiety related to competition since the 2019 European Championships in Szczecin, Poland. "I first felt it at the Europeans. It was the first time going into a competition with holding a title and trying to retain it. I felt so tired, nervous and panicking. I felt anxious and a psychologist asked me if I felt worried about retaining my title, and luckily he was there to have a chat with. I had a similar experience at the worlds and I crumbled in qualification, it was terrible. Anxiety got the better of me. Working through it it's just learning coping strategies and everyone is different." (shiftmovementscience.com, 26 Apr 2022)
