In February 2022 he announced his retirement from competitive sport, owing to injuries he sustained prior to the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. "I had to retire due to physical conditions. Prior to this I had to persevere only for the 2020 Games in Tokyo. I tried to recover after that but I was not able to reach 100%. I might plan on becoming a coach and I would like to stay in the sport. I'm still looking for a direction." (thestar.com.my, 01 Mar 2022; stadiumastro.com, 25 Feb 2022)
