ANXIETY
He struggled with anxiety in the months leading up to the 2021 World Championships in Kitakyushu, Japan. His physical trainer Maryse Allard advised him to take a break from training and instead spend time at his family's cabin at Lake Champlain in North America in order to refocus. He went on to place eighth in the individual all-around competition in Japan, the highest finish for a Canadian male gymnast in the event at the world championships. "My anxiety started with a mix of a lot of things. My biceps were hurting a lot and I was afraid of injuring my shoulder again because I had surgery on that shoulder in 2018. Also, I had to drop school because of the World Cups and world championships that were too complicated to deal with along with university. There was a little bit of shame in me because I wasn't at school and because I didn't know what I wanted to do after my gymnastics career. It might sound stupid, but not knowing where I was going was so uncomfortable for me. There was a lot of things going on in my life and all my comfort zones were not there anymore. It [the cabin] allowed me to refocus and recharge the batteries. It really put the switch back on. I went to my cabin for the weekend, with no social media, no gymnastics, no one. Just myself, meditation, a nice book, journaling and nature."
