Start sporting career
He took up gymnastics at age six at Colchester Gymnastics Centre in England.
Reason for taking up the sport
"I was always quite an active child so I started out with swimming lessons, then I tried kickboxing. But I wasn't a violent child and I just used to end up rolling around on the floor. At first I excelled in both vault and the floor, but it wasn't until around age 11 that I realised I had a talent for gymnastics."
Ambitions
To compete in the all-around final at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. (intlgymnast.com, 10 Aug 2023; Facebook profile, 26 May 2023)
Awards
In November 2018 he received a Special Recognition Award from Gymnastics Ireland in recognition of his achievements at international level for that year. (gymnasticsireland.com, 21 Nov 2018)
Additional information
INJURY MANAGEMENT
He was forced to reduce the number of apparatus used and the complexity of his routines after sustaining a superior labral anterior posterior [SLAP] tear in his shoulder after the 2021 European Championships in Basel, Switzerland. "[Speaking in August 2023] Since the 2021 European Championships, the only two pieces I was able to do pain-free were floor and pommel horse. Because of my injury, my goal going into 2023 was to maintain fitness and regain strength ready for the all-around at Europeans [Antalya, Turkey, in April 2023]. Since Antalya, I've been working to upgrade my routines." (intlgymnast.com, 10 Aug 2023)
COACHING
He works part-time as a children's gymnastics coach at Pipers Vale Gymnastics Club in Ipswich, England. In 2023 he reduced his coaching hours in order to focus on his gymnastics career. "[Speaking in August 2023] Prior to [COVID-19] lockdown I was coaching and training. I was in Pipers Vale for around 50 hours a week - 20-plus hours training and 20 hours of coaching. It was a tough time but I enjoyed coaching so much I didn't want to stop. It was only recently I mainly focused on my training over coaching."
