His father was a gymnastics coach and introduced him to the sport. "I had no other choice. My father is a gymnastics coach. He brought me into the gym literally from the cradle. At first, I just ran there, jumped, fooled around. But at the age of five my dad began to train me professionally."

In December 2017 'The Kurbanov' was added to the Code of Points for the pommel horse by the International Gymnastics Federation [FIG]. The element, first performed by him at the 2017 World Championships in Montreal, QC, Canada, involves travelling backwards in cross support over both pommels and has an 'E' value.
