He took up gymnastics in Lisburn, Northern Ireland.
Reason for taking up the sport
He got involved in the sport by accident after his father tried to take him to a swimming class but it ended up being gymnastics. His father, a carpenter, then built him a hobby horse to train on.
Trainings
He trains for up to eight hours a day at the National Gymnastics Training Centre in Dublin, Ireland.

Along with fellow gymnasts Rhys McClenaghan and Ewan McAteer, he was initially barred from representing Northern Ireland at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, by the International Gymnastics Federation [FIG]. FIG had made the decision as all three athletes were registered and had competed internationally for Ireland. However, in June 2022 FIG reversed its decision and the three gymnasts were allowed to compete. Montgomery went on to reach the final of the floor event at the Games.
